Dream Destinations: The World's Most Extraordinary Places to Sleep

In the world of travel, where you rest your head at night can be just as memorable as the destinations you explore during the day. At Brentwood Travel, we believe that extraordinary accommodations transform good vacations into unforgettable journeys. From sleeping under the dancing northern lights to sharing breakfast with giraffes, these seven remarkable places to sleep around the world promise experiences that transcend the ordinary hotel stay.

Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort, Finland

Seeing the northern lights in person is a bucket list destination for many people, but being able to see it from your bed brings the experience to a whole new level! At Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Finnish Lapland, this dream becomes reality in their famous glass igloos. These cozy, temperature-controlled domes feature glass ceilings that offer unobstructed views of the polar night sky.

By day, guests can enjoy dog sledding, reindeer safaris, and snowmobiling through the Arctic wilderness. The igloos are open from August through April, with peak aurora viewing from September to March. Outside of aura viewing times, the resort is actually open year round, featuring many other outdoor activities like panning for gold, horse / husk safaris, mountain biking and more.

The Icehotel, Sweden

For the ultimate cool sleeping experience, Sweden's iconic Icehotel in the village of Jukkasjärvi redefines what it means to chill out. Reconstructed annually from blocks of ice harvested from the nearby Torne River, this architectural marvel features rooms sculpted by different artists each season, making every visit unique.

Guests sleep on ice beds covered with reindeer hides and thermal sleeping bags, surrounded by intricate ice sculptures and artistic carvings that transform everyday rooms into galleries of frozen art. The temperature hovers around 23°F, but the experience is surprisingly comfortable—and certainly unforgettable. While the original Icehotel melts back into the river each spring, the newer Icehotel 365 section offers the frozen experience year-round thanks to solar-powered cooling technology.

The Muraka, Conrad Maldives

The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island resort takes underwater experiences to new depths with The Muraka residence. This extraordinary two-level structure features an above-water living area and a master bedroom suite submerged 16 feet below the ocean's surface.

Floor-to-ceiling glass walls in the underwater suite offer 180-degree views of marine life swimming by as you wake, sleep, and dream. From colorful coral reefs to schools of tropical fish, manta rays, and even the occasional shark, the underwater world becomes your living wallpaper. The experience comes with dedicated 24-hour butler service, private chef, and tailored experiences to make your underwater stay truly magical.

Giraffe Manor, Nairobi

Set on 12 acres of private land within a 140-acre indigenous forest, this elegant boutique hotel resembles a 1930s Scottish hunting lodge but offers a uniquely African twist. Home to a resident herd of endangered Rothschild's giraffes, the manor allows these gentle giants to visit during breakfast and afternoon tea, poking their heads through windows and doors in search of treats. The stately rooms combine colonial charm with modern comforts, but it's the extraordinary animal encounters that make sleeping here a wildlife lover's dream come true.

Ashford Castle, Ireland

For those who've ever dreamed of living like royalty, Ireland's 800-year-old Ashford Castle delivers a truly regal night's sleep. Once home to the Guinness family, this medieval castle-turned-five-star-hotel sits on 350 acres of ancient woodland alongside Lough Corrib.

The luxurious rooms feature original fireplaces, claw-foot bathtubs, four-poster beds, and rich fabrics that transport guests back to an era of aristocratic luxury. Each room has its own unique character and historical significance. By day, try traditional country pursuits like falconry and horseback riding; by night, retire to chambers once graced by kings, presidents, and celebrities for the ultimate royal treatment.

Canyon Ranch Woodside Treehouses, California

Sleep 35 feet above the forest floor in Canyon Ranch Woodside's modern treehouses. These sleek, glass-walled retreats offer panoramic views of California's majestic redwoods right from your bed.

With heated floors and luxury amenities, these treehouses blend comfort with nature immersion. The floor-to-ceiling windows bring the forest inside, while keeping you cozy. Fall asleep to the gentle sounds of the forest and wake with the filtered morning light for a uniquely rejuvenating experience.

Dark Sky Week is held every year during the week of the new moon in April, and in 2025, it will be held from April 21-28. This week was created to see the true beauty of the night sky by turning off all unnecessary lights worldwide and raising awareness about light pollution. Dark Sky Week was created by highschooler Jennifer Barlow back in 2003, and is recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association, the American Astronomical Society, the Astronomical League, and Sky & Telescope. Barlow wanted to create this week of observance, because she thought it was important to preserve the way that our ancestors saw the night sky and to get rid of any unnecessary lighting that is preventing us from having the same experience.
