Dark Sky Week & the Best Places in the World to See the Night Sky

Dark Sky Week is held every year during the week of the new moon in April, and in 2025, it will be held from April 21-28. This week was created to see the true beauty of the night sky by turning off all unnecessary lights worldwide and raising awareness about light pollution. Dark Sky Week was created by highschooler Jennifer Barlow back in 2003, and is recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association, the American Astronomical Society, the Astronomical League, and Sky & Telescope. Barlow wanted to create this week of observance, because she thought it was important to preserve the way that our ancestors saw the night sky and to get rid of any unnecessary lighting that is preventing us from having the same experience.

What is Dark Sky Approved Lodging?

According to darksky.org, "DarkSky Approved Lodging is an overnight visitor accommodation with exceptional or distinguished quality starry nights and a nighttime environment preserved through on-site DarkSky Approved lighting. They include, for example, hotels, resorts, retreat centers, cabins, and other permanent structures for overnight accommodations that promote ecotourism, or astrotourism and are situated in dark sky locations." In this blog post, we will be sharing some of the accommodations recommended by Dark Sky International, but you can see the full list here

Understanding Dark Sky Certifications

While the United States uses a tiered system for Dark Sky locations, the certification process has evolved over time. According to darksky.org, "Generally, the International Dark Sky Sanctuaries, Parks, and Reserves under the Gold Tier have the darkest night skies." However, places certified after 2018 are no longer associated with a specific tier label, though many parks continue to promote top-tier night sky quality. It's also worth noting that international locations do not follow the same tier system as those in the United States.
