Discovering the World’s Best Spring & Summer Flower Journeys

For travelers seeking nature's most breathtaking displays, spring brings a variety of blooms from the cherry blossoms of Japan to the tulip fields of the Netherlands and the lavender valleys of Provence. Whether you prefer river cruising through Europe's waterways, the immersive experience of guided land tours, or the luxury of curated cultural journeys, there's a perfect flower-focused adventure waiting for you!

JAPAN

From late March through April, cherry blossoms, (also known as sakura), create magical scenes all over Japan. You can see these blooms everywhere from ancient temples to modern cityscapes.

Top Tour Operators:

  • Trafalgar's "Splendours of Japan" takes you through Tokyo, Kyoto, and rural villages, timing departures to coincide with peak bloom periods. Their local specialists ensure you experience both the iconic viewing spots and hidden local favorites.
  • Collette's "Cultural Treasures of Japan" blends cultural immersion with nature appreciation, allowing you to experience traditional tea ceremonies and historic sites while also visiting prime cherry blossom locations.
  • Luxury Gold's "Majestic Japan" offers an upscale experience with exclusive access to private gardens, gourmet dining featuring seasonal specialties, and luxury accommodations perfectly positioned for morning and evening blossom viewing.

Insider Tip: Book at least 9-12 months in advance, as spring tours sell out quickly. Consider early April departures for the best chance of seeing full blooms.

Netherlands & Belgium

The Dutch and Belgian countryside transforms into a kaleidoscope of color as millions of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths create geometric patterns across the landscape. River cruising offers the perfect vantage point for these spectacular displays.

Premier River Cruise Options:

  • AmaWaterways' "Tulip Time" cruise navigates the scenic waterways of the Netherlands and Belgium during peak bloom season. Shore excursions include Keukenhof Gardens, Amsterdam's canal district, and charming villages known for their floral displays.
  • Avalon Waterways' "Tulip Time in Holland & Belgium" combines comfortable cruising with immersive experiences, including garden tours and learning about the rich history of both the Netherlands and Belgium.
  • Uniworld's "Holland & Belgium at Tulip Time" elevates the river cruise experience with boutique ship accommodations, farm-to-table cuisine featuring seasonal ingredients, and expertly guided tours through the region's most vibrant floral landscapes.

Insider Tip: Mid-April to early May typically offers the most spectacular displays. Look for itineraries that include a full day at Keukenhof Gardens.

Provence, France

The rolling hills of Provence come alive with fragrant lavender, vibrant poppies, and wild herbs. The region offers a display of blooms that’s particularly magical in late spring through early summer.

Exceptional Tour & River Cruising Experiences:

  • Viking Cruises' "Avignon, Lyon & Provence" river journey combines the convenience of cruising with extensive exploration of Provence's floral landscapes, historic sites, and culinary traditions.
  • Tauck's "Provence" land tour takes small groups deep into the heart of southern France, with stays at premium accommodations and exclusive experiences in lavender fields, historic gardens, and local markets.
  • Insight Vacations' "French Heritage" offers an elegant journey through France's most beautiful regions, including springtime in Provence where expert guides showcase both famous flower destinations and hidden botanical treasures.

Insider Tip: For the most spectacular lavender displays, visit Provence in mid-July when fields reach peak bloom (though the flowering period generally runs from mid-June to early August).

Whether you're interested in Japan's iconic cherry blossoms, Holland's colorful tulip fields, or Provence's fragrant lavender, these specialized tours offer well-planned ways to experience the world's best spring flower displays. Each trip combines natural beauty with cultural experiences, creating lasting memories of your springtime journey.

Dark Sky Week is held every year during the week of the new moon in April, and in 2025, it will be held from April 21-28. This week was created to see the true beauty of the night sky by turning off all unnecessary lights worldwide and raising awareness about light pollution. Dark Sky Week was created by highschooler Jennifer Barlow back in 2003, and is recognized by the International Dark-Sky Association, the American Astronomical Society, the Astronomical League, and Sky & Telescope. Barlow wanted to create this week of observance, because she thought it was important to preserve the way that our ancestors saw the night sky and to get rid of any unnecessary lighting that is preventing us from having the same experience.
